Almost there.
Tonight’s run was the best I have felt in 2 weeks. Most of the residual phlegm has passed out of my system. The soreness from the muscles returning to form has eased considerably. Things felt almost normal. For the first time in about 2 weeks, I took the lead group out for the 6 miler out and back in the park. Stretching out the legs, I made sure to measure myself out and not be crazy...

“In this country, Asian Americans are stereotyped as the meek and the mild, the ones who will always take the racism,” said Daryl Maeda, an associate professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado who specializes in Asian American studies. ”There is a perception that it’s OK to offend Asian Americans because they simply won’t fight back.”

One to one training
Last night I had an interesting assignment, I had only one runner come up to me when the announcement was made for those wanting to go on the run/walk. I was surprised but I thought it would be fun since I wouldn’t have to worry about trying to cater to multiple individuals.  As I did last week with the run/walk group, I asked my only runner, Lisa, what she was comfortable doing. My idea...

It's not about being up front all the time.
Saturday morning I awoke to a grey day. One of those grey winter days. It wasn’t too cold. There were some flurries but nothing that stuck to the ground. On this day I was slated for a run/walk assignment but this time it would be a little longer in distance, 4 miles. The plan was to go 1 mile walking and 1 mile running. When it came time to separate the groups, there were no takers for the...

Congested and lacing up
I had my first decent run last night since being waylaid by sinus demons last Sunday. At first I thought I would go a shorter distance of 4 miles. But due to a couple of people being out, I was asked to help pace the 6 mile group. I am not that crazy so I knew for a fact that I would not even try to keep up with the faster guys. The idea was to give myself a decent run in order to make sure I...

What Greater Reward?
Today was a new experience for me. On Saturday night, I caught a bad case of sinus congestion. Sunday was spent in my bed even with the Super Bowl going on. Yes, I was upset I wasn’t watching the game with friends, but that was all mitigated when the ball was batted down in the end zone the G-Men triumphed. With my running legs in no way able to commit itself to an even 85 percent effort...

Running Haiku
Please forgive if it isn’t a true reflection of the art form. My modest attempt at trying to capture the run tonight. __________________________ Runners chase shadows. Sleeping trees tranquil stirring. Spring whispers hello. __________________________ Together we seek the far horizon of dreams. Wind blows spirit soars.

Sometimes it takes awhile
Saturday morning came to soon for me. When I woke up I just knew it was going to be a slog to get motivated for an 11 mile run down the Westside Highway with Run Club.  Friday night was spent with my BridgeRunner crew in celebration of a birthday for one of our own, the talented Mr. Morrison. Dinner took place at a Korean bbq place in Midtown. Nothing better than to chow down on some charred meat...

You have to want to do it.
There are times during BridgeRunner runs where I decide that after going hard up the first time to ease up on the second bridge and enjoy the view with one of my friends instead. Not all runs have to be hard. There is something to be said about slowing down and enjoying the company.  Tonight, I didn’t feel quite smooth going up the Brooklyn Bridge. There was a little muscle soreness on the...

Boy was I pissed off
For the first time in a long time I went out for a run with anger in my system. The details are not worth getting into, suffice to say I thought the run would at the very least lessen the rising temperature I felt as I replayed the scene over and over in my head.  Setting off with a cluster of those who I love to run with, we made our way to the Reservoir to do 3 loops. The dark of the Reservoir...

Gotta wait
After all that anticipation, the let down wasn’t too bad. Due to the snow accumulation on the ground, early Saturday morning NYRR decided to change the half-marathon from a race to a fun run. The past month of training went out the window! I was pretty excited about running this race. Everything was good to go. The nature of my runs this past month gave me confidence that I would do well...

A new day
The disappointment of the morning gives way to the celebration of winter’s arrival. Careless snow flakes gently caress the hats of the many making their way up the hill. We venture to the delights of paths covered by pristine snow. Iced eyebrows cannot frighten the hardy. We find our way back to those faces who care not for frosty revelry. For shame, for who cannot be but joyful at the...

: Why Do I Run? →
wdieb: The question reverberated in my head today after a conversation inside the bookstore today. I was spending some time browsing the new releases and was pulled into a discussion about the weather with the shopkeep. Throughout the exchange it came out that I was a runner and that tomorrow morning… I thought you ran with Bridge because you heard I was fast?

Just when I thought there was going to be a break with midnight runs, life throws you a change up. An email showed up in the inbox asking me and some Bridge folks to come out for run late at night. Once again, I put on the running tights and showed up at Bowery Stadium with no idea of where we were going but game for anything. The cameras were a giveaway that the run was going to be something more...

Getting closer to real winter running
26 degrees with probably a 15-20 mph wind on top of bridges. One can almost say NYC is back to having a winter after so many days of above normal temperatures. After last year with the near constant snow, I have no problems with this winter.  Tonight we had more than a few people show up for BridgeRunners. Some new folks and some returning folks. Charlie Dark, of the famous RUN DEM CREW, was in...

Chasing clouds
Goodbye rain and clouds. The winds from tonight drove away the rain bearing clouds ushering what should be some sunny skies for at least tomorrow. This week I mean to ease up just a bit to feel fresh for the Manhattan Half on Saturday. Bitter lessons from the past have taught me the value of not getting too crazy with my runs in the days before a race. What great weather for a run tonight, mid...

Olympic Trials
I just finished watching the Olympic Trials for the marathon held down in Houston. Those who will be representing the team, Meb, Hall, Abdirahman, Flanagan, Davila, Goucher, they had amazing races to get them to London for a shot at gold medal immortality. But their accomplishments, as compelling as they were, did not have the same emotional response than when I saw Daniel Ritzenheim and Amy...

And planks to end it.
For nearly a year my body has slowly changed in definition and fitness level. At this point last year, I had no idea how difficult a plank was nor did I have any reason to add muscle development to my rather lean frame. But getting injured during an epic run through some of the highest elevations in Manhattan in knee-high snow, had me reassessing many things.  While I recovered from the injury, I...
